Digit – Component of a number. E.g. The number 23 has two digits, 2 and 3
Whole Number – A number that has no decimal or fraction part in it. E.g. 6,453,708 but not 6.43 or 2¾
Decimal Number – A number that includes a decimal points. E.g. 16.45 or 0.1
Strategy – A method of calculation which takes into account the numbers involved
Jottings – Informal notes written to aid calculation
Partitioning – Breaking down number into its place value parts. E.g. 34 is 3 tens and 4 units
Decomposition – Partitioning a number in a non-standard way to aid subtraction. E.g. 500 partitions into 4 hundreds 9 tens and 10 units if I wish to subtract 7 units from it
Grid Method – A drawing of rectangular boxes to aid multiplication
Number Line - Horizontal (or vertical) representation of the number sequence
Factor – A number which will divide into another and leave no remainder. E.g. 5 is a factor of 25 but 4 is not
Chunking – A repeated subtraction method used for division
Inverse – The ‘opposite’ calculation or working backwards. E.g. multiplication is the inverse of division, subtraction is the inverse of addition
Equation – A number sentence that includes an equals sign (=)
Near double – E.g. 16 + 17 (nearly double 16)
Nearly Number – E.g. 199 (nearly 200)
