The role of the Year 8 Young Leaders was introduced in 2009 as part of our work within the East Beds School Sports Partnership.
Pupils going into Year 8 are invited to apply during the summer term of Year 7. They then undertake an assessment day involving a morning of training and learning about the key skills and qualities required to be a Young Leader as well as leading activities. In the afternoon they organise practical activities and deliver these to a class from Southlands lower school as part of their final assessment.
Once the Young Leaders have been selected they take on three roles within Year 8. They lead table tennis clubs for pupils at lunchtimes which involve taking registers, setting up and maintaining equipment and organising play. They are also involved in delivering competition to pupils in our family of lower schools – Southlands, St. Andrews & Caldecote. They take responsibility for a small group of pupils and move around skills circuits (KS1 – multisports & KS2 – Tri-golf) teaching pupils new skills and scoring for them. Some Young Leaders are also selected to assist with our family year 3 & 4 Football and Cricket SSP competitions. This involves refereeing, scoring, timing, warming up pupils and providing activities whilst they are not playing.
